Time limit on changing flight...?

This far in advance you certainly should be able to change the itinerary as long as you aren't changing airlines, however most airlines will charge you $100-150 to do so. If it happens to be a fully-refundable ticket, there might be no charge (and if there is, I'd just make the second reservation and then cancel the first.)
